Read Across America Week
We know that there are benefits to spending time with our children and reading with them each night. Studies have shown that it not only prepares them academically for reading, comprehension, instruction and vocabulary formation but it is also beneficial for their Social and Emotional development.
The National Education Association started Read Across America Day in 1997 on March 2. This date was also celebrated as Dr. Seuss’ birthday. In recent years, the celebration was extended to a week. (More time = More Reading!)
Currently, there has been rebranding of the holiday and initiative to include and incorporate more diverse stories and people of color.
REPRESENTATION MATTERS…
It is important that young people can see and emulate positive images of themselves and their community reflected in media and those they interact with.
Our Village Learning and Enrichment Center LLC. strives to make sure that positive images are accessible. Hopefully, the Read Across America message can be extended through the year!
